Among the early historical sources of the Canary Islands, Abreu Galindo’s Historia holds a unique place. And this is so because it is the first work, with Leonardo Torriani’s Descrittione, in which we are given an overall view of the history of the Canaries and because Abreu Galindo includes remarkable and interesting information on different aspects, among which we have the origin of the natives, their way of living and their language. This paper deals with Abreu Galindo’s prehispanic words of La Gomera —one of the western Canaries— and with the explanations and etimologies that have been given to these linguistic remains.
